How Heat Pumps Move More Heat Than the Electricity They Use
Follow energy through a heat pump and see why one unit of electricity can deliver several units of heat indoors.
Transcript
How can one unit of electricity deliver several units of heat? A heat pump moves energy rather than creating it all from electricity. Follow the loop. It absorbs heat outdoors, uses compressor work, and releases heat indoors. The heat delivered equals the outdoor heat collected plus the electrical work. Now lower the outdoor temperature. The bigger temperature lift lowers this model's efficiency. Raise the delivery temperature and the same thing happens. These numbers illustrate the energy balance, not a particular appliance.
