Why does Wi-Fi slow down through walls? Wi-Fi is radio, and every wall soaks some of it up. Drywall takes about half. Brick and concrete take far more. One concrete wall can cut the signal to a tenth or less. Now add walls between the router and your phone. As the signal fades, the two fall back to slower, sturdier codes, so your speed drops step by step, long before the connection breaks. Try it yourself at Explainer Tools dot com.
